Autumnal Looks

This is what I found this week outside. Surprisingly, October is still full of color and life in my garden!

A few happy things

Happiness isn't found in things, and I wouldn't say I'm a happy person because of things. I know it's something deeper in our souls, however, there are things in my house that made me quite happy today. I took down my Christmas tree yesterday, which felt quite sad. However, to fill the void, I began looking through my house with new eyes, moving tables and pictures and books and anything else that struck my fancy. My front room has a new feel to it, and it makes me feel almost as good as a splurge at Super-Target.

Family Heirlooms: These are my great grandmothers utensils that she used for making butter. The box was used for shaping the butter, the paddles was for stirring, the tennis-racquet looking one made an indent on the top, the whisk for whisking, and I'm not sure about the swirly guy. But I think the paddle was hand carved. Any suggestions on how to display would be fabulous. Right now they've found a cozy home in a pitcher on the Hoosier Cabinet in the kitchen.

Down East Homes has a new shipment of Williams Sonoma tablecloths. This beauty matches our kitchen perfectly. I have a few other tablecloths from there (found on super-clearance); not only are their patterns gorgeous, but from what I understand, their quality of fabric and hems make them top-notch. So I guess I did splurge on this one.

Newly repurposed side table, coupled with our sweet yellow chair makes for a welcome little sitting area in the kitchen. The flowers make me quite happy.

This sweet glass bird is from Norway, a gift from my mother in law. It is welcoming in the much needed sunshine into the kitchen instead of simple adorning the Christmas tree! Kaneisha said it, and I think I agree, I would mind a collection of blown glass collectibles to hang in front of my window. We'll see if that materializes.

This photo of my love and I. He would've been 18 and I was 16, maybe 15. He wasn't in love with me at this point...

We finally moved the photos from leaning against the wall, to being hung on the wall. Makes the dresser much less cluttered. Repurposed little box now holds keys and such, instead of towels in the guest room.

Books that were in my great great aunts trunk, have been newly stacked and hopefully will add to the character in our front room. The vintage postcards are from Utah, both with writing on the front dating to the early 1900's.

The before-mentioned trunk is staying put by the door, even though the Christmas tree has been taken down. The framed poloraid is on Asher's new album, and was taken by our friend JJ on his LDS mission to the Ukraine. That was his Christmas present to us and we can't wait to put it up. The Hunter boots were Asher's gift to me for Christmas. They have already been worn a fair amount of time, when I feel the need to traipse through the snow, or stomp through puddles. This is surprisingly happening more often now that I have the boots. I imagine that is what the Queen does them as well, as they carry her Royal seal...

So that's all. Now you all know, and hopefully when you come visit, will feel like you've already been here!

Christmas Glory

It's arrival was eminent. After almost 4 years of marriage, I've decorated for Christmas. We typically weren't at our home for the month of December since we traveled so much. And last year we were simply exhausted after all of the remodeling. But the glory has finally arrived. I think my favorite thing about my tree is that we decorated with vintage Utah postcards. (Those pictures didn't turn out...)

It smells like Christmas tree.
It looks like Christmas tree.
By golly, it is. (although this is a phone picture, it still looks magical, right?)

Weekend of Sick = Reminder of Rest

Sorry for all of the "A year ago today..." posts, but I'm in awe of what we were doing last year at this time. We painted an entire house in 3 days. We built cabinets! (Well I just held up screws for Asher...). We tore down trees! We installed tile! We remodeled this cute little house in about 4 weeks. And to think that now that we've moved in, there's been a sharp decrease on most projects. Now we'd rather live in the house than work on it I suppose. And that's okay, and I keep reminding myself that.

I'm hoping to spend the afternoon planting some bulbs in the front yard, but I'm not totally sure how to plan on bulbs, when I'm going to end up planting perinnals on top of them next spring. Any suggestions? (Becca? Lisa?)

So I have a nice list of things I think I should do. I'm thinking about painting some trim outside. I'm thinking about painting the bathroom in anticipation for Mr. and Mrs. Bundy on Tuesday. (Don't hold your breath...) But most importantly I'm going to make a delicious breakfast, courtesy of Kate. A little zucchini, a little potato, a little cheese and onion, with a few cracked eggs on top. If it turns out how I'm envisioning, I'll post the recipe.

Anyway, I'm hoping that this weekend of sick will have a good Sabbath ending. I'm reminding myself here, in the company of you good people, that weekends are not always meant for working, and free days don't need to be full of projects. Rest and reading, meditating and sleeping are also important parts of a well balanced life. Asher having the flu is  a good reminder that couch time is good and lists can make a woman go mad.

Kitchen, October 08

Kitchen - Jan 09. We now have a grown-up size table, and a hoosier cabinet, but the dishes, garbage, and laundry are not cooperating for the picture.

tea and sympathy, or time alone in my kitchen

I'm choosing to sit. I'm not very good at it.
I'm very tempted to mop my floors instead. Seriously, it's been over a month. Maybe more. That's gross.
I'm considering the laundry that is staring back at me from the end of the table. It can wait.
I'm looking at dishes in the sink, mail on the
table, and bills that need filed.
I'm thinking about dinner that should be made, groceries that should be bought (Seriously, roasts are $1.39 or something ridiculous like that at Smiths), and paint that need touched up.

However, I'm choosing to take time to sit and rest, to be, to look at the beautiful fall colors that are gloriously fading in my backyard instead. A cup of tea, (made with Zabars Assam Indian tea, a sensory overload of a grocery store in NYC), and a book. I'm enjoying the sunshine before it fades into the impending winter day tomorrow...

A good night, a good year

Asher is separating our laundry out on our kitchen floor. This is wonderful because it signifies a milestone in our new home: our washer and dryer are hooked up! He is a wonderful man. And my Dad is wonderful for spending the evening hooking it up with him.

I am reading on the couch, thoroughly enjoying "Julie & Julie". (book review coming soon, I'm sure...) However, the fact that I just ruined a batch of chocolate chip cookies for the second time this month is not deterring me in my culinary adventures. Although it does make me feel that a baker such as this is not worthy of a KitchenAid stand mixer.

My furnace is working, my pantry is not empty, my upcoming week is filling up with friends. 2009 is looking good.

Catch up

Lots to write about...

I've been working at Provo Craft for two weeks and I love it. Love the paycheck too! (I will get a haircut this month!) I work with creative people and our workspace is swimming with ideas and designs. I've connected to some nice people, and hopefully will meet more. My boss is great and I'm starting to get the hang of how to be someone's assistant. Its a little awkward, knowing when to take charge, and when to let them take the reins. I've compiling a list of Office-esque appropriate humor, so be looking forward to that.

Hope and I went home, wait, did I just write home? Start over. Hope and I went back to Boulder last weekend for a little bachelorette party for her. It was great seeing all of our friends, and staying with Nick and Jacki. We drove through the quaint streets of Louisville to the Huckleberry, and I found myself tearing up. It was home! It was such a realization to process having two homes, and feeling like I belong in multiple places. Boulder is such a unique and fun city, and I am so glad that it is in my repetoire of places that I know, enjoy, and can somewhat get around in.

House update: we are painting like wild people this weekend and the floors will be refinished early next week. There's a chance we can move in next weekend! Hopefully that will be the case! Our countertop will be installed in 3 weeks. Cabinets are halfway installed, thanks to the incredible skills of John Norman and Jon O'Neal.

Love to the Latte

I love that moving back home means that lattes are in my life. Corky and Sharon have a restaurant grade latte machine in their kitchen. Sharon makes one for me every Wednesday when I'm here for care cell. It's lovely. Corky made one for me tonight, and he said that I'm one of his favorite people. So sweet, he is. He typically mocks me for adding a heaping teaspoon of sugar, but, that is just the way it must be.

Here's to you latte. You make my day sweet.
